Gerald V. “Dink” Backs Jr., 60 of Wamac died at 3:45 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2010, at St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital in Centralia.

He was born July 8, 1949, in Wamac, son of Gerald V. and Francis (Barbee) Backs Sr. He married Kathleen Johnson on March 2, 1973, at St. Mary’s Church in Carlyle, and she survives in Wamac.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Backs is survived by his mother, Frances Barbee of Henderson, Ky.; a step-mother, Peggy Backs of Sandoval; three step-sisters, Jodie Nielsen and husband Rick of Sandoval, Sue Wunderlich and husband Ronnie of Lake St. Louis, and Pam Strouse and husband Ken of Melton, Pa.; two step-brothers, Leroy Roper and wife Kathy of Centralia and Gary Roper and wife Carolyn of Ellisville, Ind.; a brother-in-law, Dennis Johnson and wife Donna of Murphysboro; three sisters-in-law, Carolyn Koeninger Jr. and husband Ed of St. Louis, Jo Ann Gilbreth and husband Mike of Carlyle and Edna Jackson and special friend Steven Griego of Centralia; an aunt, Laverne Backs of Centralia; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father; Gerald V. Backs Sr.

Mr. Backs worked at the Warren G. Murray Developmental Center, the Illinois Central Railroad, the Centralia Fire Protection District, the Wamac Police Department and as a security guard at St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital.

He was most recently serving as an alderman on the Wamac Village Board. He enjoyed crafts, his family and friends and serving his community. He had served in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1971 during the Vietnam War.

A memorial service was be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Irvin Funeral Home in Centralia with the Rev. Don Smith officiating. The service was followed by cremation.
