  Richard J. “Rick” Barr Jr., 59 of Chicago died at 5:15 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21, 2009, at his home in Chicago.

He was born Dec. 28, 1949, in Centralia, son of Richard and Norma (Weems) Barr. He married Catherine Lannon on March 18, 1978, in Chicago, and she survives in Chicago.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Barr is survived by his parents, Richard and Norma Barr; a brother, Steve Barr and wife Gail of Centralia; a niece, Tiffany White and husband Billy of Centralia; and a nephew, Stephen Barr and wife Shannon of Waskom, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Virginia Barr of Centralia.

Mr. Barr graduated from Centralia High School in 1968, Kaskaskia College in 1970 and Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 1972. After one year of graduate studies, he entered Kent School of Law in Chicago. He graduated from Kent in 1976 and passed the Illinois Bar Exam on Oct. 14, 1976, and began his career as a lawyer. He was an assistant state’s attorney in Cook County for three years and then started his own law office. After two years, he became a partner in the law firm of Lannon, Lannon & Barr, Ltd., where he remained until his death. He was an accomplished and successful trial lawyer in his field of workers’ compensation and during his career tried cases through the lower courts and up to and including the Illinois Supreme Court. He enjoyed all sports, especially Cardinals baseball, and tried to play golf once a week.

Services were held on Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Church in Chicago.
